Where to stop on the way?

We are driving to the Dordogne for a family holiday this summer.

Any thoughts on train v boat?

And do you have any recommendations of hotels to stop off at to break the journey.

Thanks

Hi Eddymum, We drove to the Dordogne last month - our first experience of driving to the south of France instead of flying. The trip turned out to be completely stress free and very enjoyable and we%26#39;ll definitely be doing it again.

We normally use the channel tunnel for short trips to France but it%26#39;s really expensive if you%26#39;re away for more than 5 days so instead we took the Speedferry from Dover to Boulogne - nice ship and the crossing only took 50 minutes. It cost about £75 return. We wanted an early start so we took an evening crossing and stayed overnight in the Ibis Hotel at Boulogne harbour which we were really impressed with - had a very nice meal there.

We broke the journey late afternoon, just as we were getting a bit tired, at Poitiers and stayed at another Ibis Hotel on the Futuroscope complex, just off the motorway. This was an excellent hotel with a really superb restaurant. If you%26#39;re travelling with children Futuroscope would be a good place to break your journey - it%26#39;s a huge theme park and by all accounts they%26#39;d love it there. We left Poitiers at about 11am and arrived at Bergerac, our final destination at about 2.30pm.

Good luck with your journey.

I am travelling to Bergerac this Friday, staying for 14 nights in a villa. We have decided to go via Eurotunnel and then to stay in Orleans on Friday night, before driving onto Bergerac on Saturday.

I can strongly recommend Bourges. A large town rather than a small city with a wonderful cathedral and a good selection of hotels. Alternatively how about Chartres.

If you go to Bourges make a detour to La Borne, a village full of individual potters (around 30 -40!).

We went Dover to Calais and then via Rouen to Chartres. We love Chartres - try as Malcolm Miller tour of the Cathedral. the Ibis is very convenient and pleasantly situated close to town but a bit pricey for an Ibis at 84 euros.

We also stayed at Limoges. Don%26#39;t!

Novotels are good because kids stay free and get breakfasts free. We travelled down to the Dordogne in July and stayed at the Novotel in Orleans. There is a swimming pool a large playground (grass, slides etc) and decent rooms for four.
