cinema in nice please...

If possible, we%26#39;re looking for an english speaking cinema. Does anyone know of one - we%26#39;d like to go and we%26#39;re staying in the old town. Thanks.

I don%26#39;t know if there is a cinema that shows English language films exclusively, but the code is to look for films that have English titles followed by v.o. - version original = v.o. films have the original language and no sub titles, as a rule.

There are 2 cinemas. The one closest to the Old Town is on Place Garibaldi on the opposite corner to the Cafe de Turin. I did read that they were planning to close it down tho%26#39;. It%26#39;s called the Mercury.

The other is the Rialto on the rue Rivoli, near the Negresco Hotel.

A word about cinemas over here tho%26#39;. You buy your tickets at the cinema just before the show starts, since this is the only time the ticket booths are staffed. Seats aren%26#39;t assigned, you just sit where there%26#39;s space. In fact we once went to see a film at the Mercury and for half the film we were sitting on the steps in the aisle as they%26#39;d oversold.

Other alternatives for VO films in the region are the open air cinema in Monaco, which closes at the beginning of September. There%26#39;s usually one VO film on at the Sporting cinema in Monaco too.

I%26#39;ll add something else about the cinema on Rivoli.

We just saw The Dark Knight there and it was a terrible experience.

There was no A/C and very stuffy, there were insects flying around the cinema and landing on me. I had to put insect repellent on during the movie. I was also not happy with the quality of the sound. Scenes during the action were at a good level but as soon as a dialogue scene came along I was struggling to hear what the actors were saying in parts.

...truthfully I didn%26#39;t expect much as it was the only English version of the movie i could find in Nice.

Just giving you the heads up!

After all that, it was still a great movie though.

AngloInfo has a list of english speaking cinema showings .

Nice does seem to be limited to the Rivoli which is screening the Dark Knight.

Monaco and Cannes have more choice

The local paper %26#39;Nice Matin%26#39; lists all the local cinemas and any films in English will have VO after the title. The nearest one to the Old Town is the Mercury in Place Garibaldi but it%26#39;s closed until 2nd Set for %26#39;works%26#39; according to the notice outside.

The Rialto in rue Rivoli seems to offer more VO films on most days than any other; the Mercury tends to show V films on Wednesdays only I think.
