Washington DC to Lourdes-by myself

I am a priest looking to go on a private retreat. I must confess that I am very intimidated with how to get to Lourdes and back by myself.

The airport code is LDE..is that the Lourdes airport? How far is that from the hotels near the sanctuary? What%26#39;s the EASIEST way to get from the airport to the hotel?? How much is it? I am afraid I am going to miss something important and get lost out there....

Can you recommend good, not too expensive, QUIET hotel?

Thanks for your responses!!!!!!

I am not an expert but since my family %26amp; I will be traveling to Lourdes in June, I%26#39;ve had to do some research.

Airport Code - LDE is in town of Tarbes. I think it is only 15 mins. away by taxi.

As far as hotels I know others will provide the information to you require soon i.e. Quiet Hotels...

We will be staying in a apartment/hotel type of accomodation called Citea Lourdes which has a small kitchenette. It has great reviews on this website. I think this will be fine as I%26#39;ve read you can walk to most of the sites i.e. sanctuary. I%26#39;ve read that Lourdes is not that large of a town.

So, it sounds like if I fly into that airport..I don%26#39;t have to worry about trains or buses..I just need to find taxis?

I actually would prefer to fix my own food and have an apartment...let me check that place out.

I have been to Lourdes leading a group of 50 people..its WONDERFUL..you will LOVE it.

ITs the going by myself and finding my own way that I%26#39;m not so sure about!

I know what you mean, morpion6, I%26#39;m also thinking about a trip by myself out of either DC or preferrably BWI. I%26#39;m not sure, however, if you can get a direct flight into Tarbes from DC..Not sure if it%26#39;s an international hub..in other words, you may have to fly into CDG (Paris, Charles de Gaule) international, then hop a flight to either Tarbes or Pau. Especially if you want to avoid the train thing. What I%26#39;m hoping to do is fly to CDG..hang out in Paris a day or two..from there go to Nevers, to see St. Bernadettes incorrupt body, then off to Lourdes. Still trying to get this together by myself, figure costs and all that stuff..and then compare it to just going on an arranged pilgrimage tour with a group and at what cost.

Good luck to you..stay safe! Sally

Through the travel sites....orbitz, travelocity, they take me all the way over to LDE, yes with a change in Paris but I don%26#39;t have to change airports or take a train.....I would leave at about 5pm from National and get there in Lourdes around 5:30pm....

What have you found for hotels in Lourdes?

I have been to Nevers...AMAZING!!!! Make sure you go see the statue of Our Lady of the Waters in the convent gardens which St Bernadette says was the image which most resembled Mary.

Father --

I think you probably have to do what the rest of us do - read a couple of guide books, make some notes to carry with you, say a little prayer, and go for it with both feet.

Traveling in France is only intimidating until you%26#39;re there dealing with it, then you%26#39;re too busy to be distracted by your fears. I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s possible to get so lost that you can%26#39;t be found, nor do I think that being an hour late arriving at your accommodation will cause irrevocable problems. Just in case, though, buy a domestic telephone card in the airport so you can call ahead if you%26#39;ll be late. Not only is it polite, but it gives you an opportunity to clarify directions.

Bon voyage.

Father we are going to Lourdes in three weeks! But have been looking for a place to stay, very intimidating, thought it would be easy. Have never been, going by plane to France, then on the train. Some of the hotels have pick up at the airport, from what I%26#39;ve read. But think there is also a bus from the airport to the town. I don%26#39;t think taxi is your only option.

Tried to find out if there were buses from LDE to Lourdes. Only found shuttles (from certain hotels) and taxi transportation. Just wanted to correct myself.

Father,

We found it pretty easy to travel to Lourdes, changing flights in Paris. Taking a taxi from Tarbes to Lourdes worked very well - about a 15 minute ride. We arranged with the driver to pick us up at the hotel and take us back to the airport as well. I have his contact information if you would like and you can schedule him to meet you at the airport. People were all very helpful and friendly. We stayed at the Saint Saveur which is very close to the Grotto - 2 blocks to the entrance. Nice hotel, quiet, with helpful, friendly staff (that spoke English). I know there are cheaper hotels however. May you have a blessed retreat.
