While in Europe 10years ago we discovered that most museums stopped charging entrance fees in the last hour of opening but allowed travellers to enter and have a brief oversee. We were able to go into Louvre late one night and have a ten minute view of Mona Lisa. Does this still occur? Does this happen in most museums/ galleries in Europe or not? Julia

Interesting, but I can%26#39;t give a definate answer as to whether this still occurs, there is no way I would go to the Lourve just for the Giaconda,, nor would I ever spent less then 3 or 4 hours there.
I do know that most major museums in France, including the Lourve and Orsay are free for the first Sunday of each month.

Well I have gone into the Louvre for no other purpose than to see the Mona Lisa. When I took my 15 year old son to Paris a few years ago he had no interest in going to the Louvre. I said he just couldn%26#39;t go to Paris without seeing the Mona Lisa. So we went into the Louvre with our museum passes, saw the Mona Lisa, and left. I must confess that I have been there 2 other times and spent about an hour there each time. I find that place completely draining--not bad, just exhausting. Next time I plan to do my research before going so I know exactly what is there and what I want to see. I think that will work much better for me.
