2 Weeks in France -- This is our

Hello Everyone,

As always before my trips I post my itinerary for you guys to give opinions. Please help on this one!

We Will be going to France Next May/09 for 2 Weeks

So far this is the plan, we want to see Paris but we also love to drive and see the countryside as well as getting to know the culture and the food from the country.

- Fly into Paris from San Diego

- Paris 5 Days

- Loire (Sleep in Amoboise) 1 Day (Take the TGV to Amboise and rent a car, drive around the Loire area. See a few castles

- Burgundy (Sleep in Beaune or Dijon) 2 Days: Drive to Burgundy from Amboise and go to little towns from here, wineries

- Drive to Chamonix and Mont Blanc (Sleep in CHamonix): 1 Day

- French Riviera (Sleep in Nice): 3 Days: Drive to Nice and do Day trips to Monaco, Cannes and little towns

- Provence (Sleep in Avignon) 2 Days: Drive to Avignon and set base here. Then drive around the area

- Fly Home from Marseille

Questions:

- Is this doable?

- Is it worth going to the Loire for just 1 day?

- Is the drive to Chamonix and the Mont Blanc a crazy idea?

- What would you change as far as the base sleeping locations for the areas?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Hi

I have been doing lots of research as we are in France next May/ June too. I would have thought to drive to Chamonix for one night would not be worth it. You would need to be there at least a couple of days ( we are doing 5 or 6 ) to get a chance to see the mountains and go up the lifts if you wish. I also believe that the drive from Chamonix to NIce would takes ages - the alps seems a bit tricky getting in and out of anyway.

We plan to drop the car off before doing Chamonix and using the trains.

Have you plotted the driving times on www.viamichelin.com ? That is a great site to get an idea of the driving times across France. I have heard that in some parts especially the mountains short distances take a long time . I would have thought that Nice to Avignon would be a long time too.

Maybe if you go to Chamonix you could do a cheap flight from Geneva to NIce? ( geneva airport is closer than Lyon airport)

Hope these ideas help and goodluck with your research.

Cheers Sonya

CONSIDER forgetting the Loire and spending one more night in Burgundy. You could take a train to Dijon. Now rent a car to see the area. Much to see and do. Then one night in Chamonix. Now switch your locations to be in %26#39;order%26#39; that will not require any doubling back. Do Avignon next, about four/five hours from Chamonix. Then do Nice and fly out of Nice.

Great! Forgetting about the Loire seems to be a consensus... Will take out..

Switching Provence and Fench Riviera sounds great also... For some reason it seemed closer to go to Nice and french riviera first and then to Provence... But if it not the correct way have no issues switching... Thanks!

We hiked for 1 wk. in Chamonix. Flew into Geneva and hired the usual transfer service from airport arrivals. One hour drive, reasonable rates with %26quot;Alpybus%26quot;. We stayed at the Best Western. The lifts up the mountains are very easy and really what you need to do to appreciate Chamonix. Search Aiguille de Midi, Mer de Glace and other tours up into the mtns. Of course Mont Blanc is right there. It sounds as if you are trying to see way too much. The French alps area is full of quaint villages and really deserves more than one day. Happy planning!!
