Museum pass advice

I%26#39;ll be in Paris for 8 days in September. This is not my first trip, but my last was 10 years ago. Reading the forum I undertand there are huge lines at some of the museums. We plan to visit the following:Marmottan, du Quai Branly, l%26#39;Orangerie, d%26#39;Orsay, Art Moderne (Pompidou) and maybe Rodin. We spend alot of time at each place. We have visited the Orsay 10 years ago and want to see it again. We want to buy a 4 day pass to bypass the lines. Here are 2 questions:

Where should we buy it? We can buy it at Cluny that is near our hotel (might pop in too). Is there a better place?

Second question - our days are Thuesday - Friday, which might be the best of the Orsay as from the forum I gather this one has the biggest lines (out of my list).

Other recommendations?

Cluny isn%26#39;t a very busy museum, so it%26#39;s a great candidate for buying the pass there. An interesting place to visit while you%26#39;re at it. Once was enough for me, but I remember it fondly.

Marmottan is not covered on the museum pass.

I%26#39;m a big fan of the pass despite the questionable economics of visiting only a few museums (your list is pretty short, and it would be cheapest to pay at each place individually) because I can%26#39;t stomach lines if there%26#39;s a way to avoid them. I find the lines in Paris awfully unpredictable. When we were there in June, there wasn%26#39;t ANY line at the Louvre or Orangerie, but a HUGE one at the Orsay even though it was pouring down rain.

With your trip spanning 8 days, you might be frustrated with a single four-day pass -- though it%26#39;s more expensive, two two-day passes might offer you the flexibility of not hitting all your museums in four consecutive days. Just a thought.

Buying at Cluny is good idea-and do visit it- the Tapestry exhibit is great and section on stained glass is good info for cathedrel visits.

The Marmottan is not on the pass but is my favorite museum.

The D%26#39;orsay is open late on Thurs-a good time to go.

The Louvre is open late Wed and Fri.

Thank you, that was quick!

We would do tours on foot in the city like the Marais and more. As I said it will be our 5th visit in Paris so we have seen most of the %26quot;must sees%26quot;. Buying 2 %26quot;two day%26quot; pass is an idea I%26#39;ll consider. Do you have any recommendations on new exhibitions? Did any of you go to the Monde Arab museum?

bmanley - did you visit Givenry? If we decide to visit we%26#39;ll have to go by train, we are not renting a car on this trip.

I%26#39;ll have to check when I get home but I think the Cluny was one of the museums that you can%26#39;t use the pass at after a certain date (it was June something 2008), there was a note on the pass that they were doing a government experiment. So have a 2nd place in mind in case they aren%26#39;t selling them

We visited the Orsay recently on a Thursday night and didn%26#39;t see any lines but we had a pass, previous visits we saw huge lines. Didn%26#39;t see significant lines at the Orangerie or Museum of Decorative Arts (great museum by the way if you like that sort of stuff) or Invalides, the only place we saw huge lines were Versailles, Notre Dame%26#39;s tower where you can%26#39;t skip the queue and St. Chapelle where I don%26#39;t think you can skip the queue because of security.

Yes, shoshi, I went to Giverney in Oct. No problem getting train from St. Lazare, then bus to Giverny. We also went to the American museum there. The gardens were lovely even in the fall and you could just picture Monet in his broad brimmed hat and smock by the waterlily pond. I loved it!!

The Cluny-Musee de Moyen Age-is still listed on the Pass. It was free for a period that ended June 30th. So I think it is a good choice for purchase. The Rodin and L%26#39;Invalides are other good choices for no lines.

Thank you all for the info. As for Giverney - if we can rent a car for 1 day we will drive there on our last day and drive to the CDG airport as our flight home is at 22:30. Otherwise we%26#39;ll take the train on another day and intend to spend the day there. Hope it does not rain...

As a 2 day pass is 30 euros and a four day is 45 euros and a 6 day is 60 euros it maybe better buying a 6 day as you wil get two extra days to visit for the same price?

We visited Paris in early June for the first time (and hopefully not our last - we loved it!), and must have lucked out - the only museum with a line was the Rodin, and that was on a Saturday. The Museum Pass was still appreciated since we didn%26#39;t have to wait in line to purchase tickets, just flash it and go in.
