Last minute trip, where to stay in Provence

Help!

I am going to be spending 5 nights in the Nice/Provence area in mid-September.

I am completely confused about where to book my time.

I am looking to stay at a centrally located, higher end location. We are experienced travelers, having been to Athens/Mykonos/Santorini(loved it) just lately.

I am looking to get the French history/coast flavor, with the ability to get out to day trips.

I have been recommended the Nice area as a home base, but I am concerned that this will be too much big city feel. Being from NYC, I get plenty of that already.

Can someone give me a nudge in the right direction?

Thanks!

Hi

Try Chateau de la Loubiere in Pertuis, about 20 mins from Aix en Provence, it is in the foothills of the Luberon National Park, so certainly not in a city feel but near enough to all amenities. Excellent base for exploring Provence and all it has to offer and a day trip to Nice is possible from there. See my trip Advisor review or look on their website

Hope this helps

Since you have stated that you want to get a History/coast flavor how about considering Western Provence rather than the Code d%26#39;Azur/ Nice area.

If you want to go really high end you might want to consider Ousteau de Baumaniere in Les Baux or the Auberge La Regalido in Fontvielle - both are gorgeous and have wonderful restaurants too. While neither is super close to the coast, both locations are easy drives to both beachy places such as the Camargue and places of signioficant historical interest both Roman (St. Remy, Arles, Nimes, Vaison-la-Romaine etc.) and Medieval (Avignon, Les Baux etc).

Having lived in %26quot;The City%26quot; for more than half of my life I am confident that if you choose to stay in or near Les Baux, you will love it. You can even scoot down to Maussane-les-Alpilles for a late afternoon glass of the wonderful local vin rose in the lovely park in the center of town. And it doesn%26#39;t get much better than mid-September in Maussane - trust me, I leave for a month there in just 23 days.

Hope this input is of some help.

Mouries is the PERFECT place to stay! It is a beautiful town---15 minutes from Les Baux, very short drive to St. Remy, Arles, Carcasson, Stes. Maries on the Mediterranean. Easy drives to a LOT of points of interest. The town itself has restaurants, stores, great places to relax. It is my favorite place in all of France.
