We are looking to go to Nice for Christmas....

Would you recommend? Is it too quiet? Can you suggest a good restaurant for Christmas Day? We have never spent Christmas away from home and family before and want to have a fantastic time.

Hi,

did you get any replies on your post? I have the same question - we are going to be in Nice for Christmas - and want to find a good restaurant for Chrismas day, as well as something special to do at Christmas Eve. If you have any info to share, please do! :)

you can e-mail me @ lenassa@hotmail.com

Christmas in France is basically an intimate, family-oriented affair.

As opposed to more extrovert events like New years eve.

Hi Lumocie,

We have visited Nice several times, and spent last Christmas there. We were very lucky with the weather, as it was bright and spakling, although a bit chilly. We were actually in a group, so spent half of the day, including lunch, together. As another poster said, it is more of a family day, so can be very quiet. However, a good restaurant meal on Christmas Day will last for a long time! Nice is busy over Christmas, so no shortage of things to do, and with all the museums and galleries there and nearby, lots to keep you busy, besides hours of people watching!

Some good places to eat are:

La Petite Maison, Le Tire Bouchon and Chez Juliette, Don%26#39;t know what they will be doing on Christmas Day. If you fancy pushing the boat out, there%26#39;s the Negresco restaurant, on the Promenade Des Anglais.

If you will have a car, they do a great Christmas lunch at a restaurant called Chez Cotton, Relais St Martin, above La Turbie, off the Grande Corniche. It%26#39;s very much a locals restaurant, very family-orientated, but lots of couples are there. It%26#39;s a lovely drive out there, and Monaco etc close by.

Hope this gives you some useful ideas. Enjoy it!

We can second the recommendation for Chez Juliette. Great setting, a comfortable feeling, %26quot;just right%26quot; food, lovely wine, well priced (umm, without the wine that is :)

We had just driven for about five hours and had been lost for another; but this experience made it all right again.

Seems like quite a few of us are going to be in Nice at Christmas/New Year, maybe we will meet but not know it!!

We are still waiting for the hotel to come back to us with restaurant recommendations for Christmas Eve and Day, they said they couldn%26#39;t let us know until the 1st of December when the menus where out and they would be in touch then.......................watch this space!

We have less than 4 weeks now before we leave the UK and are planning ahead already, I will hit the supermarkets to make sure we have enough food in the room just in case we can%26#39;t get into a restaurant as sadly our hotel doesn%26#39;t have a lunch or dinner restaurant only for breakfast and they provide the best breakfasts we have ever had in France (The Petit Palais).

Our only problem now is hearing from the vet in Calais with the appointment we hope we have booked by letter, why do they never reply?????

Have a good trip everyone!

You might get in touch with the Chantecler restaurant in the Hotel Negresco--most hotel restaurants will be open for the holidays (their guests need to eat). The restaurant has one Michelin rosette.

Hi, we%26#39;re off to Nice for just after Christmas and New year. I%26#39;ve been looking around for info, and haven%26#39;t found much, and then the nice people who run the apartment we%26#39;re staying in sent us a Christmas update.

So I%26#39;ve largely copied, pasted and edited what they told us (hope they don%26#39;t mind!) but I can%26#39;t find it on their site and thought others might find it useful:

Traditional Bird

If you want to buy a bird, the best place is La Poulette on Rue de Prefecture. You should order the bird two weeks in advance. If you need us to do this for you, we can. You will need to pick it up. Otherwise, Carrefour have pre-packed Turkeys, although they are chicken-sized.

Grocery Shopping

The best supermarket Nice has to offer is undoubtedly Carrefour. This is on Boulevard de General Delfino, behind the Port. We asked at the desk and were told that they are open on Christmas Eve from 9:00 to 18:00, closed of course on Christmas Day and on Boxing day are open as usual, 8:30 – 22:00

The next best, and nearest for apartments in the Old Town or the Shopping District is Monoprix. The small one is on Place Garibaldi. The larger one is on Avenue Jean Medicin. The opening hours are for Christmas Eve 14:00 – 19:00 and Boxing Day as usual 8:30-20:45. (the lady we spoke to said they may be open on the morning of Christmas Eve, but were not sure yet).

You might want to try the following:

Truffles from Terres de Truffes – 11 Rue St Francoise du Paule (Old Nice)

Buche de Noel from Patisserie Lac (near the Port)

Buche de Noel from Le Vanillier (near the pedestrian zone)

Fresh fish from Poissonneire Deloye, Rue Gustave Deloye (near the pedestrian zone)

The January sales which tend to start on Boxing day in the UK do not generally start here in Nice until the 6 January.

Events

From the 8-31 December the fair is set up on Place Massena. This comprises of over thirty stalls of locals selling their wares, a public skating rink and a huge big wheel. Its here that the festivities begin with the snow covered fir trees (artificial of course!) and vin chaud offered by many of the stalls all adding to the atmosphere. Go at least once. Workmen are all hands to the deck at the moment to get Place Massena up and ready for this traditional treat (its where the new tram is being built).

Don’t miss the live nativity on the 24th December at midnight mass. A magical time here in Nice where the locals all congregate at Place Rosetti.

We’d say that New Year’s Eve here has to be spent around Old Nice. Head for the promenade at midnight for the fireworks, no expense are spared for this spectacular display. We like to take a bottle of champagne down to the beach with some plastic glasses for the occasion and perhaps a little French cake. There’s something rather optimistic about fireworks, champagne and looking out to sea when welcoming in the New Year.

If you are happy to spend lots of money on New Year’s Eve, you can’t beat the top of the Meridian Hotel for sipping champagne cocktails on the roof terrace.

Whilst its not Christmassy, we thought we should also mention that the International Regatta which takes place between 27-30 December between 10am - 5pm. Head to the Promenade.

If you wish to visit museums and galleries whilst you are here, you should find that most are open, some are even open on Christmas day.

Restaurants

In Nice, Christmas Eve is regarded as a big family occasion and most of the best restaurants shut from then until New Year’s Eve. We have rung all of our recommended restaurants in Nice Cuisine and we are afraid they are all closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, except for Bocaccio which is open as usual. [Their recommended restaurants include Tire Bouchon, Chez Juilette as posted already]. Some are closed until New Year’s Eve. The good restaurants that are open tend to put on a special menu, ie expensive. If you want a meal to remember you can’t go wrong with booking a table at one of the grand hotels such as the Chantecler, the Meridian, Hotel Aston (regarded as a great Christmas meal) or the Casinos.

Bien Venue in the Old Town, run by two brothers from Stoke is open both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. They do both English and French food and are well known for their traditional Sunday Roast. YOu can generally find places open on the Cours Saleya.

Most restaurants are open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Hope this helps. I%26#39;ll post some more Christmas info when I%26#39;ve been for next year. Its been hard finding concrete info this year.

Merry Christmas Everyone!! not long now. can%26#39;t wait to get out of the UK.
