We will be driving from the ferry at Saint Malo to accomodation in Montrichard and I was hoping to make the best of the day by including a visit to Angers and Saumur along the way. Am I being too ambitious for our first day on the road in France?

I recommend you chart your proposed route in one of the following websites:

www.viamichelin.com
St. Malo to Montrichard may take longer than one might suppose.

According to www.viamichelin.com the journey from St Malo, via Angers and Saumur, to Montrichard will take you 4 hours 32 minutes without stops. If you want to stop say for 90 minutes in each place, then you are looking at 7 and a half hours. Maybe you should just stop at Angers, take a bit more time and have lunch, and drop Saumur.
If you really want to see Saumur, it is 1 hour 11 minutes drive from Montrichard; so you could do that on another day, taking in Chinon, or Azay le Rideau, or Villandry.

thanks very much. Will be staying at Angers and going on the Montrichard the next day. Advice was very helpful.
