Lorraine: Xouaxange, Hesse, Arzviller, Lutzelbourg & ...

We will be traveling the beginning of September on a barge trip through Lorraine - Alsace ultimately down through Strasbourg - Colmar - Riquewihr.

The two of us enjoy wandering off the beaten pass in France to little out of the way cafés, bistros, etc., to enjoy local activity. We would welcome any recommendations within walking/barge bike distance of Xouaxange, Hesse, Arzviller, Lutzelbourg, Sarrebourg, Saverne or Hochfelden. Not much luck finding any info., particulalry as to the first 4.

Je parle un peu Français.

We either are familar with, or can find info. on, the Strasbourg - Colmar - Riquewihr - Krafft portion, but would welcome any suggestions, as well.

Thank you in advance for your time.

There are several very good crystal shops along the canal at Lutzelbourg, well worth the time to visit them.

In Sarrebourg, next to the Mephisto shoe factory is an outlet store selling Mephisto shoes at a fraction of the retail price. I have picked up mens shoes (womens also available) at about 40€-60€ instead of the normal 200€-300€ retail price.

Another %26quot;not to be missed%26quot; location in this area, the Royal Palace in Kirrwiller. This is a dinner/show venue that equals anything in Paris (and almost as good as Las Vegas shows) that you will talk about for years to come:

Thanks, Sarastro. I just checked your postings and you seem very well informed relative to the areas we are familiar with. I appreciate your suggestions.

Any suggestions just east of, but close to, Strasbourg? Usually I%26#39;m driving, but this trip we will be walking or by taxi from the barge; probably for just a couple of hours but my wife would would like to find a nearby beer garden, etc.

Thanks, again.

We did just this trip at the end of June. Here is a link to our photos. flickr.com/photos/…

There were some very nice side trips from Saverne, but generally, everything was closed! The bike trip from the base at Hesse was very pretty and in deep refreshing shade, but the distillery and crystal shop were closed. Nancy was wonderful, my favorite stop. Just before Nancy there is an excellent supermarket right along the canal -- you should take advantage of it, its so convenient.
