Versailles: ideas for the day

We are leaving on Sunday for a week in Paris, and plan to spend Friday in Versailles. I read about les petit trains, which take you around the parks in Versailles. I have also heard you can rent a golf cart for the day, so you can see more of Versailles. Have any recent visitors tried either of these options? (Perhaps they are not available during the construction?) Was it worthwhile/a good idea? I have a 13 year old, if that would matter. If you recommend either, any tips on securing a spot? Merci beaucoup.

The trains and golf cars were available a few weeks ago. I can%26#39;t see any reason why they shouldn%26#39;t continue to be.

Having walked the gardens with my hubby and 3 kids (Kids ages 8, 12, 16 not giving you ours, lol!!) the kids have told us that the next time they visit, they will be taking us on their golf car. I think that says enough!!

If you are visiting the chateau, buy your tickets in advance. The day we were there, the queue was probably half a mile long, possibly more, snaked back on itself.

The train page is here

The Versailles site is here (click on the English bit)

According to the site, the golf cars are for those of limited mobility but to be honest, the people we saw in the buggies all looked pretty unlimited.

If you can, eat lunch either before 12.00 Noon or after 14h00 (2.00pm) as the queues are not as long. Be prepared to queue for the bathrooms. Don%26#39;t wear any clothes that will be ruined by the dust.

And have a wonderful time. Our gang (who had been all chateaued out from the Loire Valley) were bowled over by it.

And finally - sorry this is so long, I love the place!! Make sure you go down to visit Marie Antoinette%26#39;s Hamlet at the Petit Trianon. This was always and continues to be my favourite part.

How long were was your visit to Versailles? I will be going next week with my 74 yr old (very active) mom and my two teen girls. We plan on purchasing the 2 day museum pass but not using it for Versailles. I figure we need a full day at Versailles and need another two days to do our other museums. It seems we should purchase a LePasseport for 20E at an RER station. Does this seem right?

WE just got back this week. The trains you are talking about that show you around the gardens and take you to Marie Antoinettes house are 7.50 euros for adults and 5.50 for kids. For a family of four that comes out to about $42 usd. Not worth it. We did the palace, which we absolutely loved but skipped the house. You can walk the gardens, it all looks the same after a while. Everything is so expensive now with our dollar being so week that we felt that was one thing we werent going to waste money on when there were so many other things we would rather spend the money on. Have a great time. We absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED Paris and Im sure we will return someday.

ps you really dont need one full day to do Versailles. Maybe a half day plus travel time. The day we went to Versailles we also did other things. I agree with the earlier posting, make sure you buy your tickets online. The queue is huge for the Palace and I felt really bad for the mobs of people who had to wait in the heat to buy tickets. By the way, the Palace is closed on Mondays.

Where would be the best place to purchase advance tickets to Versailles (exact location, if u can)?

For example, can you purchase this in CDG airport (i.e. at the same time u buy your train tickets to Paris?) I know for Disney tix, you can purchase it at certain metro stations. I was having trouble finding details for Versailles.

Also, I%26#39;m planning to use the Paris Visite pass to take the train there, so all I need is the actual admission ticket. I hope that this combination isn%26#39;t too bad cause I read other posts that there is a package deal which includes train ride and admission ticket?

WE HAD THE VERSAILLES tickets as part of the four day museum pass which we bought online. It included all of the museums and the palace. We only bought the adult passes because most of the museums, versailles included, the kids go free. My kids were 15 and 16 and they got in free to just about everywhere. the only place that tried to charge us, but in the end they didnt, was the tombs under notre dame.

Have you thought about taking the FAt Tire Bike Tour of Versailles. I did it with ten 14 year olds and their moms in March and we absolutely loved it. The bikes allowed us to see so much of the grounds. We particularly loved our picnic in Marie Antoinette%26#39;s Hamlet. Just a thought....Moms

|||

they had a segway tour too there. be careful to read the fine prints on the bike contracts though. some companies out there put a huge hold on your credit card when you rent the bikes and they keep that hold on it for like two weeks. Might not be a problem for some, but if anyone has a budgeted amount on their card or if they are using a debit card its something to take into consideration.

Can I disagree with Loves Shoppingly.

I think you need a full day to visit Versailles if you wish to visit the Chateau and the gardens.

There is so much to see, and without turning it into an olympic style endurance event, you need certainly 6 hours or so.

Regarding the gardens, I have to say, we didn%26#39;t find them all samey. And I DO think time should be spent looking at the Trianons. You really don%26#39;t get an essence of what Versailles was without visiting them - particularly Marie Antoinette%26#39;s Hamlet. It is cutesy but it also gives insight into her too.

For BCA and RotatingGlobe -

The name of the ticket that includes the one day pass for everything at Versailles plus transport is the %26#39;Forfait Loisirs%26#39;. The English website for it is here:

transilien.com/web/…Chateau-de-Versailles

I%26#39;m told you can buy it at all stations along RER line C, so, that doesn%26#39;t include CDG. The Versailles website says you can also get it at transilien ticket windows and the tourist office under the Carousel du Louvre.

You can buy it ahead of the day you travel - just tell them whether you want the weekend price (25.95E) or weekday price (21.65E) and which zone you will be departing from on the day.

If you already have your transport through the ParisVisite then you can still buy a one day pass ahead of time at a FNAC office - which are scattered throughout Paris - or, I have read on the website that you can get it at the Tourist Office in Versailles which is on the corner as you walk from the station (Versailles Rive Gauche) to the Chateau.

Hope this helps!

I%26#39;m a fan of a full day at Versailles too if you%26#39;ve got the time!
