We are driving from Amboise to St. Remy and would like to stay one night along the way. Can anyone recommend a great town and hotel or B%26amp;B that would be worth a detour? Thanks.

There are lots of St Remy%26#39;s in France, which particular did you mean - St Remy de Provence??

Yes - the one in Provence. We will be there for 3-4 nights and then on to Eze and fly home from Nice. Thanks.

OK, I recommend a detour through the Massif Central to Le Puy en Velay. A remarkable town with interesting scenery, an unusual Cathederal, and it%26#39;s the start-point for one of the ancient Pilgrim Routes (route de Sant Jaques) to Santiago de Compostela, in Northern Spain.
Instead of driving to Clermont Ferrand though, and then directly south to Le Puy on the autoroute, bypass CF. Start from Vichy and take the D906 south through the Parc Naturel Region de Livrados Forest. It%26#39;s a lovely scenic route, and you get an amazing view as you descend into Le Puy.
There are lots of good small hotels, and B %26amp; B, but I recommend B %26amp; B at Villa Marie Louise. You have a room to yourself on the ground floor of the house, with a small terrace for your sole use, you are next to the immaculate garage, that the hosts may clear for you to park in (well, they did for our motorbikes!!) and there is a fridge for your use in the garage, you have your own entrance %26amp; exit so you don%26#39;t disturb your hosts as you come %26amp; go. They live in a lovely apartment higher up in the building, where you go for breakfast, AND you can also use the seating area in the well tended garden. The hosts are very accommodating and friendly, but don%26#39;t speak much English. Yes, a B %26amp; B I%26#39;d definitely go back to on another occasion

Le Puy is a surprise of a place, so I don%26#39;t want to give away too much about it. It%26#39;s roughly half-way on your journey from Amboise to St Remy (de P!!) so if you arrive lunch-timeish/early afternoon, you have time for some exploration that afternoon/evening, and the following morning, before you head on your way.
IF you go there, I hope you enjoy it,
EW

Thank you for the suggestion. It sounds interesting and we like to see something unusual, so it sounds like this may be the way to detour on the drive to Provence.
