Driving to the Alps

We will be driving from Dunkerque to the French Alps ( a small village between Megeve and Albertville).

We have time - 2 days to cover this distance - (but need to travel over parts of Friday and Saturday which I believe tend to be busy) and want to avoid major traffic flaspoints and delays.

It looks like trouble might await us below Dijon and in particular on the motorway towards Chamonix (A40??) .

Can anyone recommend a good alternative to the motorway? We might want to go through Annecy,is the road round the lake likely to be very busy?

How steep/winding are some of the D routes?

We are seasoned drivers albeit a bit rusty regarding French driving.

We want to make it as easy and stress free as possible (driving and stress free might be mutually exclusive though!)

Would be grateful for recommentadions/hints from anyone in the know!

many thanks!

The road around the lake near Annecy is a beautiful way to go. How busy it might be will depend on the time of the year you are travelling.
